The current edition of Sexualities is the tenth anniversary bumper issue. This journal has made an enormous contribution to the development of the field of critical sexuality studies. Ken Plummer, the editor, has written a comprehensive overview of the first ten years and outlined some of the major issues that confront us now.
He makes the important point that what distinguishes critical sexuality studies from other ways of studying human sexuality is a commitment to politics and the pursuit of justice. In developing this pursuit he throws out a challenge to many of us who grew up on queer theory to get engaged with the concept of equality as well as difference and suggests looking particularly at the recent work of Nancy Fraser and Martha Nussbaum. Such development is important if we are going to continue to challenge those people, often found in health related areas, who dismiss sexuality research as superfluous to more “important” questions like security, nutrition, reproduction and disease.
Three cheers for Sexualities.
