Hi everybody.
Welcome to the short course discussion group. I created this group so that those using the Advancing Sexualities Studies short course could be in contact with eachother in relation to any topics of interest, or any problems, that emerge from using the short course modules. The discussion group could also serve as a space where those using the modules can seek advice from other users in relation to ways to adapt module content, or in relation to additional teaching resources that could complement the modules in particular cultural contexts. Or perhaps you simply have a question about the logistics of running modules or incorporating them into your own teaching.
There are many other ways in which you can use the discussion group and I imagine that we'll all get a better sense of the possibilities once people start to engage with the module content and think about the usefulness of the short course for their own teaching or practice. I think a great way to kick things off would be for group members to introduce themselves and perhaps say something about their interest in the short course and how they plan to incorporate it into their own work. Just press on the 'add new comment' link below.
You can add a new group post at any time. I do ask people, however, to refrain from posting messages within this group that are not related to the short course. There are several other groups on SexualityStudies.net that may be more appropriate places to discuss issues of interest that are unrelated to the course.
IASSCS is responsible for the roll out of the short course over the next two years, so if you're interested in completing the course yourself (rather than using course modules in the delivery of your own teaching), you can contact IASSCS at iasscs.secretariat@iasscs.org

Sex and sexuality training resources
Hi Tin
Have you had a look at the powerpoint slides and resources for the 'Sex, Sexuality and Gender?: Basic Concepts' module on the Short Course page? There might be some other useful resources in the other modules. I would also have a look at the resources page of the website to see if anything there is helpful.
Cheers, Jules
Self-introduction
Hello Jules and everyone:I joined the group because I will start to teach the module on Sexualities and society here in the uni. I was looking for ideas to complement the syllabus that I am still working on. Particularly, I am interested in the way you deal with the media and sexualities in your course. Unfortunately, I need to adjust the structure because I have only one session to talk about the topic. On the other hand, I am doing my best to include a view of colonialism and sexualities with an emphasis in the region, that seems to be absent from your guidelines. Finally, I would like to say that my area of study is Japan and my current research project involves male circumcision from a gender perspective among Japanese men. The topic has been barely explored and it is fascinating the aesthetic dimension in the matter. Any comments or suggestions are welcome.Cheers,Genaro
Thanks for your introduction
Hi Genaro
Thanks for your introduction. Yes, a module on colonialism, postcolonialism and sexualities would have been very interesting. I think a module like this was envisaged but never eventuated. Have you been able to find much literature on colonialism and sexuality? I have some anthropological references but I'm not sure what is out there from other disciplinary backgrounds. I'm not sure if you know of Maila Stivens, but I remember attending a seminar in which she presented a paper on colonialism, sex and media in Malaysia. Perhaps she has published on this topic. Perhaps other group members have suggestions?
Cheers, Jules
