The Program for the Study of Sexuality, Gender, Health and Human Rights invites applications from postdoctoral scholars, advocates, and activists conducting innovative interdisciplinary work on the intersecting themes of sexuality, gender, health and human rights in U.S. and international contexts. Please note that this Program is a residential fellowship program and not a course.
The Program aims to provide a supportive intellectual location to further the sometimes separate conversations and advances that have occurred within studies of sexuality, gender, health, and human rights. Despite new efforts to integrate human rights frameworks into feminist agendas and to frame health as a human right, the relationship of innovative scholarship and activism about sexuality to health and human rights remains to be explored. During their residencies in the program, fellows will examine the challenges and lessons posed by integrating sexuality, gender, health and human rights in theory, research and advocacy. Our focus is on examining and expanding traditional definitions and boundaries, while acknowledging conditions of inequality, marginality, and post-coloniality.
Each year, the Program will award fellowships of varying lengths (for one year, one term, and shorter residencies from 2-6 months) and invite fellows to participate in interdisciplinary forums and seminars which bring together scholars, researchers, and advocates. The Program will provide fellows with a fellowship stipend, access to libraries, computer facilities, office space and equipment, as well as health insurance. Fellows may draw on the full range of teaching and research resources offered at Columbia University.
The Program is located at Columbia University, in the Division of Sociomedical Sciences at the School of Public Health, which sponsors interdiscplinary scholarship that crosses traditional boundaries of health, humanities, and the social sciences, while incorporating questions of advocacy and activism. The Program is directed by Carole S. Vance.
